Members of the Topeka Unified School District 501 Thursday learned the district is having similar problems that other Kansas districts are having in filling some vacant positions.

Carla Nolan, USD 501 director of human resources, said there are 13 certified positions that are open, four of which are school psychologists as part of the annual district staffing update. She said Wichita and Manhattan are reporting similar issues with trying to fill vacancies.

Nolan said they are trying to recruit retired teachers and others who would be interested in substituting until permanent staff can be hired, something superintendent Tiffany Anderson applauded.

"We have a gamut of things we're trying," Anderson told board members. "It's kind of like the draft and trying to recruit the best player from the draft. …
