Yankee Exits in Second Inning

Article excerpt

BALTIMORE - Chad Green's Friday night start ended in the second inning, escorted from the Camden Yards mound by Yankees head athletic trainer Steve Donohue.

Right elbow pain was the cause, on a night when the Orioles romped to an 8-0 win before 24,226 fans.

Coming off a buoyant series victory at Kansas City, this was not how the Yankees envisioned the start of a big Labor Day weekend against the Orioles (73-61) -- who lead the Yankees (69-64) by 3 1/ 2 games for the second AL wild-card spot.

Luis Severino was one of five relievers the Yankees deployed, and the right-hander is a possible candidate to replace Green in the rotation, if needed. So, too, is right-hander Bryan Mitchell, who gave up one run in a 5 1/3-inning start Friday for Class AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

After escaping a bases-loaded, two-out jam in the first inning - in which Green struck out the side - he gave up three hits in the second, including a double by J.J. Hardy and a two-run homer to Pedro Alvarez.

Following a walk to Manny Machado, Green was replaced by Nick Goody - who immediately served up back-to-back homers by Chris Davis and Mark Trumbo to complete Baltimore's six-run inning.

Four of those runs were charged to Green (2-4), while Orioles starter Dylan Bundy (8-5) lasted 5 2/3 innings, yielding two hits and four walks.

Goody, Severino, Kirby Yates, and Jonathan Holder were the four pitchers called up due to roster expansion and all pitched Friday.

Holder tossed a perfect sixth inning in his MLB debut and Severino followed with a perfect seventh. Yates gave up a two-run homer to Machado in the fourth.

Given Severino's shaky start to the season - when he went 0-6 with a 7.46 ERA in seven starts before his demotion - the right- hander feels that "it's important for me and important for the team" to finish strong in 2016. …
