I GOT a phone call from my brother early on Friday and he informed me that someone had broken into his shed and stolen his bike. He cycles to work pretty much every day so it was much relied upon.

He set about reporting the crime to the police via the national 101 number. The line just rang and rang with no answer.

Only on a third attempt did he manage to get an answer from an operator. The operator asked which police force he needed to speak to - Greater Manchester Police. He was then put through to what must be their crime reporting desk. Low and behold no one answered there also.

Feeling very frustrated, he looked up a general number for his local town police station - Stockport - and rang that. Again no one answered, so he tried it twice more that afternoon. Only on the last attempt did he get an answer, a recorded voice telling him to give the reason for his call and to expect a call back in the next 24 hours.

The next day and getting towards 24 hours after leaving his message to report a crime, he paid a visit to his nearby - Bredbury - police station. …
