Driver of Minivan Uninjured after Mistakenly Driving Vehicle into Lake Shawnee

For the second time in less than a week, emergency crews worked to retrieve a vehicle submerged in Lake Shawnee.

The blue Chrysler minivan went down a small embankment near the yacht club on the west side of the lake. It was completely submerged and wasn't visible from the shore.

The Shawnee County Sheriff's Office identified the driver as Thomas McGowan Jr., of Topeka. McGowan was attempting to turn around and backed the minivan into the lake.

The incident was reported at 2:24 p.m. The driver was able to exit the vehicle, Shawnee Heights Fire District battalion chief Rick Diebert said on the scene.

Two divers with the fire department entered the water, assessing the vehicle's location and positioning. A diver in the water said the vehicle was upside down and that it was difficult to see much in the water. …
