How Can We Ignore Syrian Refugees' Plight?

Nicholas Kristof's Sept. 1 column ("Today's Anne Frank Is a Syrian Girl") impelled me to write this letter, to damn the shameful lack of humanitarian conscience and courage in our national political figures, and especially in the current candidates, that severely restrict the number of Syrian refugees fleeing systematic murder in their own country by their own "leaders" to come here.

The current population of the U.S. is roughly 324 million men, women and children. Engage in the following "thought experiment" to try to get at an underlying truth, as genius Albert Einstein did to come up with his theories of special relativity and general relativity. For simplicity, let's call the 324 million "citizens."

Now line up every "citizen" in the U.S. in a single-file conga line, back and forth across the countryside. …
