Holes shut down State Road 72

SARASOTA COUNTY -- State Road 72 was closed in both directions late Saturday after two large holes formed in the road.

East of Myakka River State Park and west of Sidell Road, a hole 6 feet in diameter formed on the north shoulder of SR 72, according to the Florida Department of Transportation. The hole is under the westbound lane and extends a bit into the eastbound lane. Another hole is growing on the south side of the road, underneath the guardrail along the eastbound lane.

Drivers headed west can detour the area by taking S.R. 72 to Sidell Road, then taking Sidell Road north to Sugarbowl Road, taking Sugarbowl north to State Road 70, taking S.R. 70 west to Interstate 75, and then taking I-75 south back to S. …
