LAWRENCE -- The Lawrence Arts Center has been recommended to receive a $50,000 grant to support the Free State Festival in 2017 and 2018, the National Endowment for the Arts announced this past week.

The Free State Festival began in 2011 as a small independent film festival before expanding into a celebration of film, music, arts and ideas in Lawrence's Cultural District when it received funding from the NEA in 2014 and 2015, the Lawrence Arts Center said.

This year's Free State Festival will be June 20-25 and will feature a free outdoor show by Public Enemy, a talk by Radiolab co- founder Jad Abumrad and standup comedy by comedian and TV star Maria Bamford. A full schedule of events and tickets are available at www.freestatefestival. …
