Avalon Builder Set to Present Plan Tonight in Edgewater

EDGEWATER -- There could soon be a new building erected in the place of the 240-unit apartment complex on River Road that was consumed by flames last year, leaving roughly 500 people without homes.

The developer of the property, AvalonBay Communities Inc., is expected to present plans before the Edgewater Zoning Board of Adjustment tonight to rebuild the structure with updated amenities but the same number of units and floors, on roughly the same footprint as the old building.

The company intends to use the same materials as it did to build the original structure, Ron Ladell, senior vice president of AvalonBay, has said. Many developers favor the lightweight wood construction method that AvalonBay has used in the past because it is fast and relatively inexpensive, but firefighters and safety advocates say it can allow flames to spread quickly and increase the potential for collapse. …
