Mizzou hoops hosts Kentucky, LSU in SEC play

Just like two years ago, the Missouri men's basketball team will open Southeastern Conference play at home against Louisiana State. Kim Anderson's Tigers host LSU on Jan. 4, an 8 p.m. tipoff on SEC Network. Mizzou upset the visiting Tigers in overtime two years ago in Anderson's first SEC game. The SEC released the full conference schedule Tuesday. During the 18-game league schedule, Missouri plays six opponents twice, in Columbia and on the road: Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, Ole Miss and Texas A&M. Mizzou also hosts South Carolina, Vanderbilt and Kentucky, and travels to Georgia, Mississippi State, Florida and Tennessee. (Dave Matter)

Rascals rally in ninth * Mike Jurgella scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth Tuesday night to cap a late rally that pushed the River City Rascals past Southern Illinois 4-3 in the opening game of the Frontier League semifinal series in O'Fallon, Mo.

Game 2 in the best-of-five set will be at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at O'Fallon's CarShield Field.

River City erupted for four runs in the ninth off Miners closer Adam Lopez. Kyle Gaedele had the big blow with a three-run homer. Josh Ludy and Josh Silver began the inning with singles.

Jurgella doubled with one out and scored on back-to-back wild pitches. River City pitchers Austin Warner, Nick Kennedy, Shane Street and Jason Zgardowski combined to hold the Miners to three hits. (Steve Overbey)

Altidore leads U.S. to qualifying win * Jozy Altidore scored twice in a three-minute span of the second half, Sacha Kljestan and Paul Arriola had goals and the United States beat Trinidad and Tobago 4-0 on Tuesday night in Jacksonville, Fla., to reach the final round of qualifying for the 2018 World Cup.

The Americans finished atop Group C of the semifinal round in the North and Central American and Caribbean region and will open the hexagonal on Nov. 11 against Mexico presumably in Columbus, Ohio, where the U.S. has won four straight qualifiers over El Tri by 2-0 scores. …
