Dawn Cullen is a high-energy woman, brimming with ideas and enthusiasm. It's the perfect mix of traits for an entrepreneur whose latest venture opened last month in the Putnam Village Shopping Center. Cullen has opened dawn marie, a boutique with its name spelled in lower case, that is between the West Virginia Hobbies and Crafts store and the Rio Grande restaurant. Her shop specializes in new clothing for women, infants and children.

Joining her in the boutique is her daughter, Lorren Cowan, a seamstress who works part time in the shop, providing minor alterations.

Cullen, a former licensed practical nurse, spells the name of her shop in lower case as a nod to the infants' and children's clothing she sells.

"I think it's cute, because we have kids' things, Cullen said.

Cullen previously owned another boutique, but it focused strictly on women's clothing. She took some time off to recharge after closing her previous business.

"I just did women's (clothing) before, and then I decided to do children's, because I knew that was a big niche here. I do baby's, children's and ladies' clothes and boutique items, she said.

And soon, dawn marie will begin offering women's clothing in plus sizes.

"That's been a big request.

At dawn marie, Cullen offers lines of women's clothing and accessories that appeal to a broad range of ages.

There are gift items, too, including candles and scarves.

Her infantwear line includes layettes made by her daughter, seamstress Lorren Cowan. Cowan can hem and "take in garments, such as uniforms and other items.

"People can call and make an appointment with her to get measured, Cullen said.

"I normally do hemming, taking in, and, if there's enough room, taking out. Just simple stuff, Cowan said.

And Cowan offers fast turn-around on alterations.

"I can have it to you in two business days, she said.

Cowan of Dunbar also makes layette gowns for infants.

"I do make dresses, as well. We're also going to start making Christening dresses and baptismal gowns for infants, Cowan said.

At dawn marie, customers can also order "onesies and T-shirts for infants that have custom, vinyl lettering on them, courtesy of Cullen's sister-in-law.

"We can make them with cute sayings on them, Cullen said.

In the short time she's been open, Cullen has been getting a lot of positive feedback, especially for the infants' and children's clothing. …
