Lester M. Richman, an educator who specialized in science and taught a course in model rocketry at McDonnell Planetarium in the St. Louis Science Center in the 1980s, died Tuesday (Sept. 6, 2016) in Chesterfield of congestive heart failure. He was 79.

"He wanted to share the excitement of science with kids," said Andrea Richman, his wife of 55 years. "He made science interesting, and he did these magnificent experiments."

In a Post-Dispatch article that ran in 1982 about educational programs at McDonnell Planetarium, Mr. Richman was described as "really pretty rigorous" in his approach to model rocketry.

An astronomer and lecturer at the planetarium from 1970 to 1985, Mr. Richman created and ran a space-science show that proved to be a popular attraction. About the same time, he made several appearances as "Mr. …
