Bank Says New Scaife Documents Should Be Kept Sealed

PNC Bank on Friday asked a judge to seal documents that will be filed soon involving the children of the late billionaire publisher Richard Mellon Scaife, arguing that they consist largely of confidential legal communications and are attached to an improper claim for punitive damages.

PNC is one of three trustees that controlled a trust fund created in 1935 by Richard Scaife's mother, Sarah Scaife, that was drained of $450 million over 20 years largely to support the Tribune-Review newspapers. The other trustees are attorney H. Yale Gutnick and James M. Walton.

Mr. Scaife's daughter, Jennie Scaife, and son, David Scaife, would have inherited any balance upon their father's death. They want the trustees to pay them a surcharge, and want to amend their earlier filings to include a punitive damages claim. …
