Diaz Has Two Hits for Springfield Team

Article excerpt

Cardinals shortstop Aledmys Diaz, playing on a medical rehabilitation option (fractured right thumb) for Class AA Springfield in the Texas League playoffs, was two for four with a run-scoring double in Game 3 of the series Friday night in Springdale, Ark., in an 8-3 loss to Kansas City's Northwest Arkansas farm club. Prior to that, Game 2, suspended on Thursday night in Springfield, was finished with Springfield holding on for a 12-11 victory.

That best-of-five series, which Northwest Arkansas leads 2-1, will continue Saturday night and whether or not Diaz will stay there and play another game is unknown. But, when he does return, manager Mike Matheny is preaching caution.

Realizing that Diaz has played just two games in the field since returning to action and only four overall, counting a couple as a designated hitter at Class A Palm Beach, Matheny said, "Just being healthy isn't necessarily the answer to everything right now. We also have to get his timing right, get him confident with how he feels at the plate."

There will be a ripple effect in the Cardinals' infield and second baseman Kolten Wong said, "(Diaz) deserves to play.

"All I know is, 'Who can play second base like I can?' I take pride in that."

Wong then started a spectacular double play in the third inning to turn around Friday's game.

Reliever Trevor Rosenthal, out since late July with shoulder problems, will face some Cardinals hitters in a simulated game setup on the field on Saturday and righthander Michael Wacha, battling a another stress reaction in his shoulder, isn't too far behind that program after throwing another bullpen session on Friday. …
