Riverdale School Shuts Down Water Fountains

RIVERDALE -- After reviewing water test results, the Board of Education has shut down all of the water fountains in Riverdale School and is replacing them with water coolers.

Testing was conducted over the summer in response to a new state law requiring school districts to test for the presence of lead in drinking water.

Although the federal Environmental Protection Agency has not set a Maximum Contaminant Level for lead, it has established a treatment technique for samples that contain over 15 parts per billion (PPB). The state Department of Environmental Protection follows the same standard of 15 PPB.

The district tested 38 different drinking water and food water preparation outlets for lead. There were detectable levels in every source, and three tested above 15 PPB. …
