A lengthy construction project on Interstate 70 in St. Charles might be behind last month's dip in revenue at the Ameristar casino.

The casino's August revenue fell 5.6 percent, although it still took in more money than the five other gambling halls in the St. Louis market.

I-70's Fifth Street exit, which is heavily used by Ameristar customers, is under reconstruction. Crews are building a new ramp as part of the Fairgrounds Road and Fifth project, which includes a "diverging diamond" interchange at the intersection of Fifth and I- 70, full access to and from Fairgrounds and the addition of a fourth I-70 lane in both directions at Highway 94.

Numerous temporary closures have resulted. The $20 million project is scheduled for completion next spring.

Two other area casinos had lower revenue in August and three extracted more winnings from gamblers, according to state regulators' reports available Monday. …
