Topeka Man Arrested in Connection with Shooting outside Hi-Crest Kwik Shop

Federal agents have arrested a Topeka man wanted in connection with an August shooting outside a Hi-Crest convenience store.

Authorities on Tuesday said Maleek Lashawn Hughes, 39, was arrested Monday by the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force.

Hughes had been sought for a violation of conditions of supervised release. A federal warrant was issued for his arrest on Aug. 31.

According to a statement from Chief Deputy U.S. Marshal Craig Beam, the Kansas Apprehension Task Force determined Hughes was hiding in the 700 block of S.W. Western.

Task force members tried to stop Hughes as he drove away from an apartment complex, but he briefly eluded law enforcement.
