Paralympic Gold Medalist Adds a Bronze

Gold medalist Gianfranco Iannotta of Garfield won bronze Tuesday morning in the 400-meter race at the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Iannotta, 22, finished with a time of 1:02.16 in the T52 classification, just shy of his personal best of 1:00.59, which he set in the preliminary heat Monday. His childhood friend and Team USA competitor Raymond Martin won gold with a time of 58.42 seconds, while Japan's Sato Tomoki won silver with a 58.88-second finish.

For Iannotta, the 400-meter became a race for the bronze after Martin and Tomoki surged ahead of the pack early on in a tight battle for gold. Iannotta maintained a steady pace, staying ahead of the other competitors for most of the race.
