PATERSON -- The remains of a human body were found inside Paterson's former police headquarters, less than a block from City Hall, during a routine inspection conducted for the building's new owners.

The structure at 111 Washington St. has been vacant and boarded up since 1979, after a fire, police said. Authorities said they believe that the person whose remains were found on Monday may have been homeless and had sneaked into the building sometime during the years after it was boarded up.

The building is located in the city's busy downtown beside the City Hall annex building, and across the street from the former Paterson mall, where a public school, the HARP Academy, had made its home until this school year.

Several of the buildings on the east side of Washington Street in that block are vacant and boarded up. …
