Jury selection began Tuesday in the trial of Ausar Walcott, a former NFL player and Hackensack High School football star accused of punching and badly injuring a man outside a Passaic nightclub three years ago.

Authorities said Walcott punched 24-year-old Derrick Jones of New York City outside the Palace Gentlemen's Club in Passaic on June 23, 2013. Jones sustained a brain injury from the blow and was treated for months at a hospital and later at a rehab center, police said.

Walcott was initially charged with first-degree attempted murder, which carries up to 20 years in prison. He was later indicted on the less serious charge of aggravated assault, which carries a penalty of up to 10 years in prison.

Walcott's attorney, Miles Feinstein, has said Walcott punched Jones in self-defense after he and his friends were surrounded, accosted and attacked by a group of men outside the club. …
