FORMER England manager Glenn Hoddle says City were justified in paying a huge fee to land John Stones from Everton.

The Blues paid Pounds 47.5m for the defender - a price that raised a few eyebrows.

He had struggled for form at Everton last season and was criticised for his defending.

But Pep Guardiola made it clear to the City board he wanted Stones and the 22-year-old has settled superbly since his arrival.

Hoddle believes Stones' passing ability makes him a perfect fit for Guardiola's system.

"The main man [in City's back four] is John Stones - that's why Guardiola went out and got Pounds 50m worth of a defender because it suits the way he plays," he said.

"Stones has got the ability to take out four or five players with just one pass. …
