Pastor Randy Bush ("Quantum Theology 101," Aug. 28 Forum) represents the most recent Christian attempt to "baptize" science. Some 60 years ago Teilhard de Chardin, eminent Jesuit paleontologist, put forth some groundbreaking theories to similarly reconcile the advances of science, including quantum physics, in "The Phenomenon of Man." More recently in 2013 in her book "The Unbearable Wholeness of Being," the brilliant nun Ilia Delio expounded on Teilhard's complex theories, echoing Pastor Bush's effort of exploring, i.e., updating the "people of God" to worship a "21st-century God freed from the static models of third-grade classrooms."

In the aforementioned instances of attempts to overcome the grade-school level of theological acumen on the part of believing Christians, God is invariably described as having a "loving intentionality" with an intimate cosmic connection to the universe. The notable decline in religious affiliation, Pastor Bush implies, can perhaps be stanched by his efforts at getting more people to understand this. …
