1889 The Fifth Avenue Horse Car System was replaced by cable cars, which reduced the running time from Downtown to East Liberty by 30 minutes to one hour. The 5.5-mile system, built by the Pittsburgh Traction Co., was considered to be the city's first "rapid transit" facility.
