Betting May Be Offered at Far Hills Steeplechases

The century-old Far Hills Race Meeting steeplechase event in Somerset County may offer legal wagering on its races, under a bill that Governor Christie announced he had signed into law on Wednesday.

But Dennis Drazin, the Monmouth Park operator who has been hired to manage the gambling operation, said he is not sure he will be able to offer betting at the Oct. 15 event because the legislation requires that borough officials be given a 30-day notice.

"We're still going to try to do it, but the Racing Commission informed me last week that if the governor doesn't sign it right away, there might not be enough time to consider it for 2016," Drazin said.

Win, place and show betting would be offered, Drazin said, with exotic bets such as exactas and trifectas also likely to be options for bettors. …
