Man Struck by SUV in North Bergen May Have Worn Ear Buds

NORTH BERGEN -- A 33-year-old man remained hospitalized in serious condition Wednesday, with injuries suffered the prior evening when he was struck by a sport utility vehicle as he jaywalked across busy Tonnelle Avenue, authorities said Wednesday.

Hudson County Sheriff Frank X. Schillari said investigators think the man, identified as Alejandro Vedals of North Bergen, was wearing ear buds at the time of the accident.

Schillari said that when police arrived at the accident scene shortly before 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, they found Vedals lying unconscious in the northbound lanes of the divided four-lane highway, a section of the combined Routes 1 and 9.

The sheriff said Vedals had sustained severe head injuries, but EMS workers treated him and he regained consciousness and became combative.

Vedals, an undocumented immigrant, was taken to Jersey City Medical Center, where he initially was listed in critical condition, but the man was stabilized and he has since been upgraded to serious condition, Schillari said. …
