EAST RUTHERFORD - Jonathan Casillas cringed at the notion of even having to watch the game again.

Not that the Giants need video evidence to remind themselves of what a defensive breakdown their 52-49 loss to the Saints was from 10 months ago, but in preparation for the rematch, they took their medicine and promised to learn from the debacle.

"A lot of points -- a whole lot of points," Casillas said. "Drew [Brees] threw seven touchdowns, I believe, against us. We weren't good at all, defensively, in any phase of the game, at any part of the game. We didn't tackle that great, we blew coverages, we let people run free. Do you want me to keep going? It just wasn't a good showing. That was one of those games where you look back and you don't watch the film because you are just disgusted by it.

"We have to do better and this is a guy that will make us pay on the road or at home."

Quarterbacks Brees and Eli Manning combined for 13 touchdown passes in a game that ultimately was decided by a fluke of a facemask penalty on special teams and a winning 50-yard field goal as time expired.

Five players who started on the Giants' defense that day are expected to do so again in Sunday's home opener: Casillas, defensive tackle Johnathan Hankins, linebacker Devon Kennard, cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and safety Landon Collins.

Defensive end Kerry Wynn started last season, but should play in a reserve role.

Of the others starters in last year's game, four are not in the NFL: cornerback Jayron Hosley, defensive tackle Markus Kuhn, safety Brandon Meriweather and linebacker Jasper Brinkley, who was released last week.

The Giants put $200 million into upgrading their defense with the additions of defensive end Olivier Vernon, defensive tackle Damon Harrison and cornerback Janoris Jenkins, as well as the return of Jason Pierre-Paul. …
