RIDGEWOOD -- The Village Council introduced an ordinance this week that would change the rules for those wishing to privately record the village's public meetings.

The ordinance would repeal another law, passed in May, requiring citizens who wish to make audio or visual recordings of meetings that are not typically recorded by the village to announce to the public they are doing so.

Supporters on a prior council said the original rule was an attempt to preclude "secret" recordings of small village subcommittee meetings, which are typically far less formal than council meetings. But Mayor Susan Knudsen, who was the council's sole dissenter when the measure was adopted, called it "unnecessary" and "ineffective" Tuesday, and said it limited the legal rights of the citizenry. …
