Christian Challenge at Washburn University will sponsor a "Reality Debate" on the topic of "Naturalism or Theism: What Better Explains Reality?"

The debate, featuring Frank Turek and Jeffrey Jay Lowder, will take place at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21, at White Concert Hall, near S.W. 17th and Jewell on the Washburn campus.

Turek is the author and co-author of a number of books, including "Stealing from God: Why Atheists Need God to Make Their Case" and "I Don't Have Enough Faith to be an Atheist."

Turek, the president of, has debated several prominent atheists, including Christopher Hitchens.

Lowder is co-founder and past president of Internet Infidels Inc., one of the principal websites for atheists, agnostics and skeptics. He is a contributor to The Secular Outpost and has written "The Empty Tomb: Jesus Beyond the Grave," which scrutinizes the historical claim of the resurrection.

In addition to Christian Challenge, the event is being sponsored by Topeka Bible Church, Northland Christian Church, Lion and Lamb Church, First Southern Baptist Church, Western Hills Church, Ratio Christi and the Kansas-Nebraska Convention of Southern Baptists.

In other religion news:

- A pancake feed and bake sale will be from 7 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 17, at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, 1821 S.W. 37th. Guests will get all the pancakes they want, plus two sausage links and a drink -- orange juice or coffee. The cost is $6 for adults and $4 for children 10 and under. Eggs and more sausage will be available for an additional charge.

- University United Methodist Church, 1621 S.W. College, will have its fall thrift sale from 8:30 a.m. to noon Saturday, Sept. 17. Clothing, household items, dishes, tools, toys and plants will be available.

- Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church, 4525 N.W. Button Road, will have its fifth annual Taste of Chocolate event from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17.

The event will feature a new "Taste of Chocolate" cookbook, in which all of the recipes include chocolate as an ingredient.

- True Vine Missionary Baptist Church, 307 S.E. Tefft, will have a Fun Festival fundraiser from 1 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17. The event will include food, games, face-painting, a cake walk, prizes and blood-pressure checks.

- The Brotherhood Department of St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church, 2222 S.E. Madison, will have a musical program at 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17, at the church, 2222 S.E. Madison. Various musical groups from the Topeka and Kansas City areas will furnish the music.

- True Light Church Ministries, 2046 S.E. California Ave., will have a fish dinner starting at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 17. The cost will be $10 for the meal, which will include fish plus two sides and a dessert.

- A "Living Proof" simulcast with Beth Moore will be shown from 9:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17, at First Presbyterian Church, 601 Elm St. in Wamego. The cost is $20, which includes lunch. To register or for more information, call (785) 456-2556 or email

- The five Topeka congregations of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will sponsor a blood drive for the American Red Cross from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17, at the LDS Topeka Stake Center, 2401 S.W.
