The construction of the new Jardine pre-kindergarten through eighth-grade campus is proceeding on time, according to Topeka Unified School District 501's deputy superintendent Larry Robbins.

"We project that it will be completed in May of 2017," Robbins said of the Jardine campus at 2600 S.W. 33rd Street, adding that he gets weekly updates on the $33 million project every Friday from McPherson Contractors, of Topeka.

According to the latest update from McPherson, the work on the new Jardine Elementary school that is connected to the existing middle school is "progressing nicely" with framing continuing on the upper and lower areas of the building along with the continuation of mechanical, electrical and plumbing installation throughout the building. Windows and frames are also in the process of getting installed. On the exterior, work is continuing on the curbs and gutters on the east side of the building, brick work near the gymnasium is progressing and roofing on two sections of the building has started, according to the McPherson report.

Students from the Avondale West, Shaner and Bishop elementary schools will be moved into the new Jardine Elementary in August, Robbins said, after they close in May.

Currently, Robbins said there are no specific plans for Avondale West once it closes this spring.

"We just know we're going to repurpose it," he said. "We're beginning to look into options."

Plans remain for Shaner to be converted into a districtwide preschool center.

"We wouldn't take existing (preschool) programs out of the elementary schools," he said. "We would just expand pre-K offerings (at Shaner)."

As was described in the April 2014 bond issue patrons approved, Bishop will be turned into a USD 501 professional development center, Robbins said, allowing for large gatherings and training sessions. …
