Family Escapes Raging Fire

LYNDHURST -- Firefighters struggled to douse a three-alarm blaze Thursday night and were twice forced to evacuate the home amid dangerous conditions, authorities said.

The fire's cause does not appear to be suspicious but the blaze is under investigation, Deputy Fire Commissioner Paul F. Haggerty said in a statement.

The fire was reported at 10:19 p.m. on the 800 block of Pennsylvania Avenue, Haggerty said. Flames were raging through the home's windows and part of the roof when firefighters arrived. Residents had already escaped.

Firefighters tried to fight the blaze from the front door but at one point they were "pushed down a flight of exterior stairs from a large ball of fire that had flashed over them," Haggerty said.

The deputy commissioner described firefighters' efforts as "an intense struggle" -- part of the roof collapsed -- before the blaze was deemed under control at 11:21 p. …
