1881 The 20th president of the United States, James A. Garfield, died 2 months after being shot by Charles Guiteau; Chester Alan Arthur became president.

1934 Bruno Hauptmann was arrested in New York and charged with the kidnap-murder of Charles A. Lindbergh Jr.

1959 The unfinished East Hills Shopping Center was offered to highest bidder at auction ("largest sheriff's sale ever"). The center was worth $8 million.

1980 An investigating grand jury determined that the April 24 drawing of the Daily Number "666" had been fixed. Six persons, including WTAE-TV's popular Nick Perry, were charged with conspiracy.

2006 Route 65 in Kilbuck was closed after a major landslide resulted from the construction of a shopping center with a Super Wal- Mart as an anchor on the site of the former Dixmont State Hospital. …
