Leonia Schools Ask 7 Families for Proof They Live in Town

LEONIA -- After re-registering every third-, sixth-, ninth- and 11th-grade student this summer as part of the district's first residency verification program in four years, seven high school students were barred from attending school until their parents or guardians provided proof of residency.

But district Superintendent Joanne Megargee said it is unlikely that the students, two freshmen and five juniors, reside outside the district, and that their families likely forgot or put off filling out a re-registration form and providing documents necessary to complete the process.

The district initiated the re-registration program at the request of parents and residents who worried that students living in other municipalities could be illegally attending Leonia schools. …
