Festival Spotlights Emerging Startup Economy

The three-day Thrival Innovation and Music Festival kicks off today with up to 20,000 visitors anticipated for a mix of rock concerts, networking happy hours and discussions about the latest medical breakthroughs.

The former Allegheny Center on the North Side, which has become the city's biggest new business incubator, will host most of the events starting at 11:30 a.m. and the festival is designed to showcase the city's emerging startup economy with entertainment geared toward young entrepreneurs, said Bobby Zappala, founder of East Liberty-based Thrill Mill Inc., a nonprofit small business incubator and festival organizer.

"Pittsburgh has so many demographics, so it really works nicely," the 34-year-old Mr. Zappala said. "The goal is to capture as many different audiences as possible. …
