VENICE 56, NORTH PORT 0

NORTH PORT -- A week after a dominating performance against Manatee High, the Venice Indians picked up right where they left off with a 56-0 blanking of North Port High in the Class 7A-District 11 opener for both teams Friday night.

Venice scored the first four times it had the ball, opening up a 28-0 advantage before eight minutes had elapsed in the game.

The Indians needed only three plays to move 85 yards after receiving the opening kickoff. A 67-yard run by Matthew Laroche set up an 18-yard TD scamper by Bryce Carpenter and Venice had a 7-0 lead just 56 seconds into the contest.

The Indians moved 88 yards in five plays on their next possession. A 45-yard pass from Carpenter to Jaivon Heiligh got Venice into Bobcat territory, where Laroche ripped off consecutive runs of 21 and 26 yards, the latter a sweep to the right which gave the Indians a 14-0 lead with 7:26 to go in the quarter.

A short punt set up the next Venice score, as Courtney Doss went 20 yards down the left sideline to make it 21-0, then Laroche followed with a 42-yard burst up the middle one minute later for a 28-0 lead.

Laroche finished the first quarter with 165 yards on seven carries and totaled 203 yards on 9 attempts before sitting out the second half.

"We've told our kids it doesn't matter who we're playing or where we're playing, we just want to make sure we're getting better each week," said Venice coach John Peacock. "I thought they did a good job with tempo tonight. We made a few mental mistakes that we've got to correct like jumping offsides. We had a couple of penalties that killed drives, so that's something we've got to clean up."

Carpenter took over with the passing game in the second quarter, completing 7 of 8 throws, including touchdown passes of 40 and 21 yards to Heiligh and 15 yards to Casey Milliken to give the Indians a 49-0 halftime lead. …
