Putnam County Schools has noted that September is Attendance Awareness Month.

While some school absences are unavoidable, due to illness or family matters, a prolonged set of absences hampers a student's ability to keep up and progress in classes. Faithful attendance not only improves the chances of better comprehension of materials and higher grades, but it establishes a pattern of "stick-to-it-ness that fosters good habits in upper grade levels, in college and in the workplace in the future. According to the Attendance Works initiative, just 10 percent of school absences, excused or unexcused, can impair a student's academic performance. That can be as little as missing two days a month, or 18 days, during the school term.

Last year in West Virginia, to improve grade-level reading, 52 schools and counties across the state signed up for the Attendance Action Map. …
