THE Prime Minister in her article (Why Manchester is the ONLY place for the Olympic parade, M.E.N., September 20) strayed briefly into an area where she appears to be gravely misinformed. And were she a regular reader of your newspaper she would realise why.

Greater Manchester, Theresa May told us, "is on the up - its economy going from strength to strength."

The evidence, alas, is to the contrary.

It is barely six weeks since your newspaper rightly alerted us to a new study conducted by the muchrespected Joseph Rowntree Trust in conjunction with the University of Manchester.

In brief, it told us 620,000 people in Greater Manchester - that's a disturbing one-in-five - live on the breadline; even more shockingly 180,000 of them are children.

Half-a-million people, it said, lived in districts classed as being among the 10 per cent most deprived areas of the country. …
