Two Hospitalized in Early-Morning Apartment Fire at 1317 S.W. Western; Estimated Damage Loss Is $150K

Two people were hospitalized after a large fire early Wednesday ravaged a central Topeka apartment building.

Topeka Fire Department crews were called at 12:27 a.m. to 1312 S.W. Western, where a blaze was reported at a three-story apartment building.

Upon their arrival, fire crews found heavy smoke and flames coming from the east side of the 12-unit twelve apartment building.

Firefighters conducting a search found that two people were still in Apartment 4 inside the building. Crews were able to get the two adults out of the building.

Fire officials said two residents were transported by American Medical Response ambulance to a local hospital for injuries not believed to be life-threatening. The two later were transferred to The University of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City, Kan. …
