Our Critic's Suggestions for LouFest 2017

Let's be honest: LouFest producers at Listen Live Entertainment don't need any tips from me for their successful event especially after accomplishing what looked like the impossible this go-round: keeping Ms. Lauryn Hill on schedule. (She was actually only about 10 minutes late hitting the stage, which counts as early.)

LouFest saw another great outing Sept. 10-11 in Forest Park, as about 50,000 music lovers came out to see LCD Soundsystem, Chris Stapleton, Hill, Band of Horses, Big Gigantic, Buddy Guy, Anderson .Paak, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, the Kills, St. Lucia, Vince Staples and many more, including a load of St. Louis acts.

While attendance didn't make the dramatic jump LouFest had been making year to year, it still held its own from 2015's totals, even with the absence of controlling interest from the Austin, Texas- based C3 Presents and the departure of festival founder Brian Cohen.

Still, as is my custom, I have a few friendly odds and ends worth sharing as the festival forges toward its eighth installment Sept. 9- 10, 2017.

* While C3 Presents wasn't present at LouFest this year, the upped presence of St. Louis folks behind the scenes was great to see. Throughout the weekend, I ran into various folks I know from the St. Louis music scene who had some hand in making things happen, including new LouFest partner Jonathan Azu.

* The commitment to St. Louis acts on LouFest stages this year was admirable. There's no need to increase that even more next year, but at the very least they should book as many St. Louis acts as were booked this year.

* LouFest looks to be a place where a legend can perform in front of a younger audience that's not his or her core fan base and still be well received. How else would one explain the appearance of Buddy Guy, the oldest performer to headline a LouFest stage at 80 years of age? …
