Joy Firshein, 63, of Teaneck has volunteered as a Girl Scout leader for more than three decades, and on Saturday she went "over the edge" for the group she cares so much about, rappelling down the side of a 10-story building as part of a fundraiser.

"It was empowering," she declared after reaching terra firma at 1 Garret Mountain Plaza in Woodland Park. She was one of more than 50 adults who, along with corporate sponsors, helped the group raise more than $80,000 on Saturday for the Girl Scouts of Northern New Jersey, said Betty Garger, the group's CEO.

Family and friends cheered on those who rappelled at the family festival, which also featured a rock-climbing wall, obstacle courses, entertainment, food and face painting.

Representatives of Over the Edge, a special-event company, assisted those who rappelled down the building right off Route 80, which is home to PNC Bank and several other businesses, including The Record. …
