MAHWAH -- Township police headquarters now has a 24-hour drop box in which the public may discard medications.

The box is meant for all drugs except those that are in liquid form or contain needles. Its contents will be emptied as needed and incinerated.

The effort is in keeping with a state program, run through the Attorney General's Office and Division of Consumer Affairs, that allows for anonymous disposal of prescription medications. But the Mahwah Municipal Alliance bypassed a state waiting list for such boxes and bought one outright.

Mayor William Laforet, an MMA member, said the act is part of the organization's effort to address substance abuse in the community.

Police Chief James Batelli said officers already have emptied the box's contents three times since its installation two weeks ago.
