Runner-Up Domico Can Only Tip Her Hat

Article excerpt

WOODLAND PARK - Although she's a senior at Wayne Hills, Taylor Domico looks up to a sophomore who competes in cross-country for another school.

Domico admires Anna George, a talented sophomore from Montville who's one of the top competitors in Morris County.

"She's been my idol since I first saw her run," Domico said. "I wanted to be like her."

So on Saturday morning, when the runners met at the Passaic County Coaches Invitational at Garret Mountain -- and eventually finished first and second -- Domico had a plan.

"I just wanted to stay with her," Domico said.

That wasn't going to be easy, considering George was on a mission and looking to avenge a setback on the same course last week in the Maroon Invitational.

"I just didn't have my best race last week," George said.

When the starting gun went off in the Group 3 race Saturday, George sprinted for the lead, putting about 50 yards between her and the rest of the field.

That pace didn't fit Domico's plan.

"She went out faster than I thought," Domico said.

Domico said she was ready for the race, especially because she changed her training regimen.

"I started running with the boys team," Domico said. "That's helped me cut my times. I knew that if I wanted to run with the best, I had to stay with the best."

So Domico tried her best to keep up with the front-running George.

"She's really good," Domico said. "She was like 12 seconds ahead of me. I couldn't catch her."

But Domico made sure she finished second.

George won the race in 19:26 and Domico, running strong, finished in 19:37. Domico's efforts helped Wayne Hills earn the team title, easily outdistancing Roxbury.

Domico's teammate, Emily Becker, was fourth in 20:20, followed by the Patriots' Natalie Zawistawska in sixth, Gessica Mongelli in 10th and Shea Brennan in 13th.

"I think this is a good sign for us down the road," Domico said. …
