Wayne Man Shot after Arranging a Cellphone Sale

CLIFTON -- A Wayne man was shot Saturday when a cellphone sale he arranged over the Internet went awry, police said.

At 10:40 a.m., when Clifton police officers arrived near Lake and Van Winkle avenues in response to reports of gunfire, they found the 18-year-old victim shot in the leg and bleeding, Detective Lt. Robert Bracken said.

Police learned that he had arranged over the Internet to sell individual cellphones, Bracken said.

In a release, the lieutenant said a Passaic man, Darren Watkins Jr., 18, entered the passenger side of the victim's vehicle and demanded money from him at gunpoint. A struggle ensued, and Watkins allegedly shot the other man and fled, Bracken said.

The victim was sent to St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center in Paterson for treatment and was released later that day, Bracken said. …
