Board Member Stands by St. Louis Schools' Response to Lead Contamination in Drinking Water

ST. LOUIS * Richard Gaines, a member of the Special Administrative Board that oversees St. Louis Public Schools, defended the school system's handling of lead-contaminated drinking water Monday.

At a meeting of the administrative board, Gaines came under fire from Bill Monroe, who sits on the elected school board which currently has little say in the district's governance.

Monroe's primary query involved the timeliness of the appointed board in addressing the issue, noting $10 million the district spent to fix environmental problems.

This summer a report found 30 school buildings in St. Louis Public Schools have elevated lead levels.

But Gaines rebutted Monroe's comments, saying he didn't think the gathering should have to sit through "misinterpretation, bad information and maybe outright lies," regarding the board's actions. …
