Two shootings reported in downtown Charleston

Charleston police responded to two shootings in the downtown area on Monday.

In the first incident, which took place around 4:30 p.m. near the Charleston Arbors apartment complex on Washington Street near the Elk River, Alex Brown received a minor wound to his arm, according to Lt. Steve Cooper, chief of detectives. A second shooting took place around 6 p.m. in the area of the Transit Mall, which is between Court and Summers streets, according to a dispatcher.

In that incident, Cooper said Byron Higginbotham, 34, suffered a gunshot wound to the leg. He was treated at a local hospital and released.

Charleston police were investigating the possibility that the shootings might be related.

Cooper did not respond to requests for further information Tuesday, and dispatchers referred further questions to the Charleston Police Department.

A magistrate court official said there had been no shooting- related arraignments as of late Tuesday afternoon.
