Garfield Police Probe Scam That Cost Woman $1,000

Police are investigating a scam that cost a Clifton woman $1,000 after a caller convinced her that the money was needed to keep her husband from being deported.

The Garfield Police Department is delving into the incident, with part of the scam having taken place in the city. Capt. Ray Kovach, officer in charge of Garfield police, said the scam began when a 48- year-old woman received a call at her home in Clifton on Sept. 16 from what she thought was a U.S. customs and border patrol representative.

The caller told her that her husband had been detained by immigration authorities and asked her to pay $5,000 to release him so he could "avoid torture and deportation," police said.

The caller subsequently lowered the payment to $1,000 and called the victim again from what appeared to be a cellphone. …
