This excellent editorial commentary describing serious flaws in the utilization of various kinds of forensic scientific evidence in the criminal justice system should be required reading for forensic science practitioners and students, as well as prosecutors, criminal defense attorneys and both trial and appellate court judges.

A National Academy of Sciences report in February 2009 pointed out similar deficiencies and called for significant changes in the multifaceted sphere of forensic scientific testing. It is regrettable that seven years later, many of the same invalid practices and test results are still being applied and utilized by forensic science labs, law enforcement and prosecutors. …
