Topeka Church Says Pastor's Arrest Tied to Kidney Failure, Behavioral Changes

A southwest Topeka church whose founding pastor was arrested this week in connection with aggravated assault said Friday a medical condition is responsible for the actions leading to his arrest.

Greg Varney, 61, pastor at Light of the World Christian Center, 3301 S.W. Gage Blvd., was arrested Wednesday. The circumstances leading to his arrest weren't clear.

However, the church on its Facebook page Friday evening shared that Varney's family had given permission for the church to share details about his medical condition.

"We also feel it is important to tell the community that Pastor Greg did not harm or attempt to harm any person in the incident leading to his arrest," the post said.

The church said Varney has had health concerns that resulted in kidney failure and is undergoing dialysis. …
