Topeka Oktoberfest Holds Weiner Dog Grand Prix

Good food, German-American culture and beer are all to be expected at an Oktoberfest celebration, but the most fascinating part may be the wiener dogs.

One dog owner took the play on words to its fullest extent Saturday, dressing her dachshund "wiener" dog in a frankfurter bun with ketchup and mustard "toppings."

In the parking lot before the wiener dog races that are a highlight of Oktoberfest in Fairlawn Plaza 2016, Amy Lewis dressed her dog, Bella, with a felt horse jockey riding on her back.

"It doesn't really make much sense, he just kind of hangs out on her back," Lewis said. "Or maybe he gives her the drive to beat the competition."

Dozens of dogs in groups of about five at a time ran the length of the parking lot into their owners' arms to laughter and cheers from a crowd packed into the plaza. …
