I SUPPORT G Jarvis' call to share from our plenty with those in need at harvest ('Sharing and caring time,' Viewpoints, September 30).

I know that in Gorton there are several worthy projects in churches (Oasis and Mustard Tree spring to mind) that do just that.

And what a 'summer' it has been with stop-start heat and rain resulting in some very disappointing crop yields in gardens and allotments. However, we can always go to the market or supermarket where we are overwhelmed by choice and plenty.

It's not so for many however in our world where for farmers and subsistence growers rain and drought are literally life and death issues, both for their livestock and for their families.

We may have our attention focused on Syria, but even in rich southern Africa 15 per cent of cattle have died and the government is considering culling hippo and buffaloes in the Kruger National Park. …
