Tory Council Leader Enters Mayoral Race

TRAFFORD council leader Sean Anstee has confirmed he will run to become Greater Manchester's Conservative mayoral candidate.

Speaking at Tory party conference in Birmingham, the 29-year-old told the M.E.N. next year's race could be a 'game changer' - and said people should not automatically assume Labour hopeful Andy Burnham will win. His announcement ends months of speculation over whether he will stand.

Coun Anstee, who is the region's youngest - and only Tory - council leader, said: "Many people in the north used to feel the Labour party represented them, but no longer feel that's the case. What they need is someone who will - and that's what I'm have traditionally voted. It's about doing something new."

So far, no other Tory candidates have publicly thrown their hats in the ring for the internal selection process, which opened last week. …
