1789 President George Washington declared Nov. 26, 1789, a day of Thanksgiving to express gratitude for the creation of the United States of America.

1888 Fire destroyed Machinery Hall and other exposition buildings. The Arabian, the first steam locomotive to run in the United States, and Stephen Foster's piano were among the exhibits destroyed.

1947 A survey showed that the steel industry was spending "in excess of $100 million" in the Pittsburgh district for expansion and replacement of old equipment.

2010 John Russell was let go as Pirates manager after they compiled their 18th consecutive losing season with the loss of 105 games, the franchise's most defeats since 1952. Clint Hurdle, former Colorado Rockies manager, was hired to replace Russell as manager of the team. …
